VIRGINIA LAW FOUNDATION TO CO-HOST 2018 RULE OF LAW AWARDS AND WAR CRIMES SEMINAR

CHARLOTTESVILLE (October 1, 2018): The Virginia Law Foundation will co-host the annual Rule of Law Day and Awards Program at the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond on Monday, October 15. A central lesson of the Holocaust is the centrality of the Rule of Law in the preservation of civil societies. This program honors individuals whose life and work emulate the highest ideals enshrined in the principles of the Nuremberg Military Tribunal and later the International Court of Justice.

This year, Michael W. Smith will receive the Rule of Law Award and the Honorable Jane Marum Roush will receive the Civility in the Law Award. “Our 2018 honorees represent the very best of what the Virginia legal community has to offer,” said Raymond M. White, Executive Director of the Virginia Law Foundation. “Their diligence, compassion, and ethics are unwavering and truly worthy of recognition.”

Preceding the awards program will be a two-hour continuing legal education (CLE) seminar that will focus on the international and domestic legal frameworks erected to respond to war crimes, genocide, and human rights violations. The speaker will be Brian J. Bill, Virginia CLE’s Director of Seminars and an expert on international laws surrounding armed conflict.

A luncheon will be offered between the two programs, with generous support from VLF Fellow Jay Weinberg.
